A well connected to an oil and gas production platform caught on fire Thursday, engulfing the vessel in flames about 100 miles off the central coast of Louisiana and forcing 13 people overboard, Gov. Bobby Jindal said Thursday.All 13 people have been accounted for, said Petty Officer Bill Colclough of the Coast Guard. Mariner Energy, which owns the Vermilion Oil Rig 380, said none of the crew members was hurt in the incident, despite earlier reports of a single injured worker.

Samsung has become the latest challenger to into the tablet computer battle, unveiling its Galaxy Tab at the IFA conference in Berlin. The device will run on Google's Android operating system, with a capacity of 16 or 32Gb, expandable by 32Gb more.It weighs 380g (14oz), and has an 18cm (7in) screen - smaller and lighter than its principal rival the iPad.Vodafone has announced that it will distribute the device in most European markets starting in October.

The health of 33 trapped Chilean miners is authorities' top priority, as crews this week began drilling in an effort to free them.The men have been trapped 2,300 feet underground since a rockslide cut off their exit route on August 5.Drillers could take three to four months to reach the subterranean chamber, Chilean authorities have estimated.Humans can survive in extreme environments, such as the 540-square-foot space the men share. But this kind of prolonged confinement with darkness, crowding and lack of sanitation can take a heavy physical toll.

Ferrari has decided to recall all of the 458 Italia cars it made this year, following reports of a number of the luxury cars catching fire.Ferrari said its engineers had flown around the world to investigate five reports of "thermal incidents".As a result, it will be asking the owners of more than 1,200 of the supercars to bring them in for modification work.

A hurricane warning was issued for North Carolina on Wednesday as Hurricane Earl barreled toward the East Coast packing winds of 125 mph. The National Hurricane Center said Earl, a powerful Category 3 hurricane, could make landfall on the Carolinas as early as Thursday. The center also issued a hurricane watch for Delaware.
